Context

Framatome and Spie Nucléaire aimed to explore the potential of mixed reality in simplifying complex maintenance operations.

The chosen scenario focused on the maintenance of a cooling circuit valve during reactor shutdown (RRA), a challenging task requiring:

  • Hands-free operation
  • Comprehensive documentation
  • Detailed multi-step procedure

02

Solution

Conseil 3D developed a Microsoft HoloLens application tailored to:

  • Explain the functionality of the RRA valve
  • Guide teams in replacing an electrical connector.

Using object recognition, virtual elements are automatically overlaid onto real objects.

Key features include:

  • Cutaway view of the pump with interactive annotations and animations illustrating its operation
  • Step-by-step guided procedure with animated 3D holograms demonstrating technical tasks
  • Integrated media support (PDFs, images, videos)
  • Voice control to keep hands free while interacting with real tools.

03

Results

OP3 Connexity application provides real-time assistance, enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and safety of maintenance operations.

Operators experienced the benefits of mixed reality firsthand, leading to the acquisition of additional equipment and broader deployment of this technology across nuclear plants.
